The Melbourne Ice Development Squad is an important part of the Melbourne Ice. The Development Squad is a group of high-potential young players selected from the ranks of Ice Hockey Victoria to train with the senior squad.

Any male Victorian hockey player is able to demonstrate their interest in the Development Squad through their participation in the off-season's open training sessions, both off ice and on ice. Membership of the final Development Squad is by invitation.

Based both on performance and maturity, members of the Development Squad are eligible at any time to be called up to the senior squad, either temporarily or permanently.
